Why Your Nighttime Skincare Routine Matters More Than You Think

Why Your Nighttime Skincare Routine Matters More Than You Think

Most of us think of skincare as something we do for our skin. At night, it's something we do with it.

While you sleep, your skin is busy. Blood flow to the skin increases, cells renew, and the barrier loses more moisture than it does during the day. Your skin is working hard, and it's working with whatever you left on it.

Think of it as a handoff

Your day routine is about protection: SPF, a barrier, defense against the elements. Your night routine is the handoff, where you clear the stage and give your skin what it needs for the night shift. When that handoff gets skipped, the night shift starts with a messy workspace.

"But my skin looks fine"

This is the most common thing I hear. Dull, uneven, or congested skin often builds up slowly, so no single night looks like a problem. The difference shows up over weeks, which is why consistency beats perfection.

It's also your wind-down

Your nighttime routine is one of the few moments in the day that belongs only to you. The slow cleanse, the warm cloth, the oil pressed into your skin: these cue your body that the day is over. Your skin and your nervous system both benefit.

Start with two minutes

If a full routine feels like too much, begin with one thing. Cleanse thoroughly before bed, every night, for a week. Notice how your skin feels in the morning. Then add from there.
